[ENG] Mini PCs remain the bright spot in a weak W Europe Desktop PC market

13 April 2017 (London, UK): Volume sales of mini PCs (housed in a space-saving small case design) through Western Europe’s largest distributors continued to grow in Q1 2017 even though demand in the overall Desktop segment remained weak, according to data published by CONTEXT, the European IT market research company.

While overall Desktop PC sales fell by -10% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2017, sales of mini PCs were up by +26% over the same period. As a result, their share of the Desktop market increased by 7 percentage points from 18% in Q1 2016 to 25% in the same period this year.

Mini PCs have enjoyed rising popularity over the past year because of their space-saving design and improvements to their performance, and many PC vendors have increased their focus on the segment to leverage rising demand. In Q1 2017, the top three vendors in distribution – HP, Intel and Lenovo – posted year-on-year volume growth of +47%, +8% and +78% respectively.

Resin based 3D Printers gain traction in Professional/Industrial markets in 2016

22 March 2017 (London, UK): The worldwide Industrial/Professional* segment of the 3D Printing market again struggled in 2016, seeing -10% fewer printers ship for the year compared to 2015 mostly due to the difficulties on the polymers side in making headway into production and away from just prototyping. Polymer technologies making the most headway into the manufacturing sector for 2016 included resin-based, Vat Photopolymerization printers (most commonly known as SLA or stereolithography but also including many other sub-technologies) and polymer Powder Bed Fusion printers (which include not only SLS – Selective Laser Sintering – technologies but also newer technologies like HP’s MultiJet Fusion). Resin based printers saw global shipments increase +8% in 2016, putting this category ahead of Material Extrusion as the top technology on the Industrial/Professional side of the market for the first time since 2000.  Material Extrusion still dominates the total market (Industrial/Professional plus Desktop/Personal) however with the bulk of the Desktop/Personal printers being of this type.

3D Printer Shipments by Technology

While the sale of Polymer based Industrial/Professional 3D Printers struggled again in 2016, metal-based systems again showed growth with both Powder Bed Fusion solutions and Directed Energy Deposition solutions seeing share gains.  Powder Bed Fusion metal 3D Printers were up +17% while Directed Energy Deposition System sales were up +28% Y/Y.

Market leaders Stratasys and 3D Systems both saw fewer Industrial/Professional 3D Printers ship globally in 2016 than in 2015 with notable Y/Y increases coming from EnvisionTEC, privately held EOS, Concept Laser (with heavy new investment from GE) and SLM Solutions with all but EnvisionTEC having metal as part of their portfolio.

As the Polymers side of 3D Printing shifts some of its attention toward production, the industry still needs to prove itself in terms of part repeatability, production of isotropic parts and materials cost.

Early Q4 2015 Printer Sales via Western European IT Distributors Hold Up as Colour MFP Devices Grow

CONTEXT Imaging Research Update

30 November 2015 (London, UK): Unit sales of printer hardware by IT distributors across Western Europe (WE) grew +2% year-on-year in the first six weeks of Q4 2015, an improvement following the -2% drop in Q3 2015, according to data published by CONTEXT, the European IT market analysis company.

Driving the overall numbers were sales of multi-function laser and inkjet printers (MFPs), while sales of single-function printers (SFPs) continue their double-digit decline. Year-on-year unit sales of laser and inkjet SFPs were down -17% each in early Q4 2015 whereas sales of inkjet MFPs increased by +9%, driven mostly by sales of business-targeted inkjet MFPs which account for 30% by volume and almost 50% by value of all inkjet hardware sold through WE distributors.

Unit sales of laser MFPs continued to increase, up +6% over the period and driven by cheaper colour devices, sales of which currently account for 21% of all laser hardware business. However, while the shift towards colour continues, mono laser devices still account for more than 60% of unit sales.

In terms of vendor performance across all printer hardware categories combined, HP remains the dominant position across WE with a market share of 46% in early Q4 2015, growing +10% compared to the same period last year. Canon and Epson follow with shares in distribution of 16% and 11% respectively.
